NUTS AND BOLTS FOR THE BEGINNING OF SCHOOL 2009-2010

LUNCH MONEY:   School lunches may be paid by the month, week or day.  Make checks out to Nutrition Services (NS).  We recommend prepayment because it eliminates money confusion for our young students, especially at the beginning of the school year.  Checks can be given directly to the Sanislo lunchroom manager, Terry Cochran. The kitchen office is behind Mr. Seevers’s office. Checks or cash can also be sent in an envelope with the child’s name on it to the classroom.  We will make the best possible effort to get your money to our cook for recording to the appropriate student account.   Prices are:

Milk:                             .50
Breakfast:               $1.25 (full price)
Lunch:                    $2.25  (full price)
Adult Lunch:          $4.00
HOME LUNCH:   Lunchtime is very exciting – everyone is hungry.   We eat in our classroom area so we are very careful eaters.  We practice and use our good eating manners.  We also clean our table space and pick-up food off the carpet when we have finished eating.  It is important with home lunches to have the food in easy to open containers.  The child should be able to open and close the food containers by them-selves.  (The teachers are busy serving lunches to School Lunch children.)   Please note that some store-packaged juices/ puddings are very difficult to open or are very messy to work with.   It is a good idea to have a few “practice” lunches at home with all the food containers that the child will be using at school.  PLEASE DO NOT SEND SODA POP TO SCHOOL FOR YOUR CHILD TO DRINK.
STUDENTS SHOULD KNOW IF THEY HAVE A LUNCH FROM HOME (HOME LUNCH) OR IF THEY ARE GETTING A SCHOOL LUNCH.   PLEASE HELP  THEM UNDERSTAND THESE NEW IDEAS.  THANK YOU.

CLOTHING:  We encourage children to be independent with their ability to dress themselves and tie their shoes.   Especially, for bathroom purposes, it is necessary for the children to be able to fasten and unfasten their own clothing..  Please label your child’s  jacket,  backpack and lunch box with  his/her name. It is also wise to have a spare pair of  pants, socks, and underwear kept in your child’s  backpack to be prepared for  the rare ‘accident’.
SHOES:   Soon the children will taking off their shoes in P.E. and putting them back on after the class.   May we suggest, for ease and time conservation that the children wear easy “shoes” especially on gym days.   Velcro straps, buckle shoes or the new “elastic”tie shoes help tremendously with our busy time schedule.   Shoe laces can be very unsanitary, especially for boys in the bathroom area.
SNACKS:    The children have a mid-morning snack every day.  We ask parents to provide these snacks – enough for their whole class – every month.  For example, a box of crackers,  a box of graham crackers, 24 yogurt tubes, box of animal crackers, fresh – cleaned fruit or vegetables, or small boxes of raisins.  About 13 apples/oranges/bananas  will serve a class.   Please do not send cookies, cakes or candy.  Please send packages of snacks at the 1st of each month.  Fresh snacks can be sent on any day and we will try to serve them immediately. Currently each class has approximately 22 students but that number could increase to 28, in which case we would need more snacks.
WEEKLY READING AND HOMEWORK:  Please try to read daily with your child and sign-off on the weekly reading chart that comes home with the weekly homework.   We expect 20 minutes, or two books, of at-home reading per night (7 days.)  Homework is sent home on Tuesday and returned on the following Monday.  Homework is to be returned in the student’s colored folder that is provided by their teacher.  The homework provides an opportunity for parents to see what skills are being studied at school so parents can discuss these skills with their children.   Returning the homework promptly on Monday is a big lesson in responsibility.

BIRTHDAYS:  To encourage healthy eating habits we ask that no cakes or sweet treats are sent to school for your child’s birthday.   The children celebrate birthdays by drawing special pictures for the birthday child.  The teachers put the pictures into a booklet form and it is presented  to the child and we sing Happy Birthday to him/her.  Private birthday invitations must be distributed outside of the classroom area when the children are exiting school at the end of the day. As classroom teachers we will not be distributing invitations for you. Using this procedure eliminates many hurt feelings of those children who may not be invited to the birthday festivities.  We are creating a classroom phone list which is another helpful tool when you want to invite classmates to parties and for ‘play dates’. Your family’s number can be listed ONLY if you give your signed permission.

SCHOOL SUPPLIES:   This topic is addressed in your child’s first day of school ‘information envelope’. Sanislo requests a $15.00 donation to Sanislo PTA as a contribution to school supplies which are bought in bulk and provided to your child by his classroom teacher. Please do not send any personal pencils, crayons or markers.   WE REQUEST THAT YOU PROVIDE A FULL-SIZED STUDENT BACKPACK FOR YOUR CHILD.  It will need to hold a 9 ins. X 12 ins. Folder.   We also request that each child bring one box of facial tissue.   We also request that each child have a water bottle with a pop up lid. A canister of antibacterial moist wipes is not required but would be a welcome extra for table cleaning with adult supervision.

VOLUNTEERS:   We will be addressing the Volunteer Sign-ups for Kindergarten late in September.   We do encourage classroom volunteering.  There will be opportunities for weekly one-hour time slots, special event projects, field trips and “at home” cutting, tracing and word processing.  One special volunteer commitment will be assisting students in small group scientific investigations. Three volunteers per class are needed for Science.  We prefer that our Science volunteers be the same group of people throughout the year or at least for one full unit (roughly one trimester).

SCHOOL HOURS:
Children who are eating in the school breakfast program may enter at 9:10 and walk down the hall to the breakfast tables which are across from the library. All other students may enter at 9:20 a.m. and proceed directly to their classrooms. School begins at 9:25 with the Pledge of Allegiance. Children who arrive after the ‘Pledge’ are considered tardy and  are required to check in  with Ms. Utley in our front office BEFORE entering the classroom. School is dismissed at 3:30pm.  Bus riders exit through Kindergarten side doors.  Everyone else will exit through the front doors.  Please meet your child at the flag pole area.

FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

Please feel free to bring your child into the classroom – hang coat, find his/her desk and help him/her get organized for the day.  You are welcome to join us through the Pledge of Allegiance.  After the Pledge, we encourage you to join other Sanislo parents for coffee and tea in the Performance Center or library (an announcement will be made as to the exact location).
